Our support
At Kisimul we provide exceptional services for young people and adults with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs, including behaviours of concern. We offer a wide range of services, including:
- Registered school for 8 – 19 year-olds
- Children’s care homes for 8 – 19 year-olds
- FE college for 18 – 25 year-olds
- Adult residential and supported living for adults 18+
The people we care for are unique, amazing individuals. To help them lead more fulfilling lives, we’ve recently introduced a brand new Meaningful Life model of care, support and education that focuses on the meaningful outcomes that can occur when young people have the opportunity to develop strong connections with their carers.
At Kisimul, our colleagues work closely with the people we support and their families to agree and describe what a meaningful life and fulfilling future could look like for them.
Every young person has an individualised plan with bespoke goals that span home and school life to encourage the maintenance and generalisation of skills.
Therapeutically informed approach
We are very fortunate to have our own in-house team of therapists, enabling us to take a therapeutically informed approach, which is Kisimul’s golden thread, enabling meaningful lives for individuals accessing our services. Our therapy team collaborates with our education and residential professionals to support and enhance the physical, mental, emotional, and social wellbeing of the individuals we support.
The key to our Meaningful Life model is an integrated approach to ensure that therapeutic approaches are embedded consistently within a person’s daily life, across all settings.
Traditionally, when supporting people with complex needs and associated behaviours of concern, the focus was on the modification of behaviour. Outcomes tended to focus on alignment with societal expectations, rather than what is truly meaningful and motivating for a person.
Recent neuroscience and psychology research shows that emotional regulation can be better supported through trusted interactions with colleagues, rather than rewards and consequences.
The individuals we support learn from those with whom they have strong attachments. Therefore, by training and supporting all our colleagues in education and care in therapeutic interactions, the people we support receive consistent, person-centred care that leads to more meaningful outcomes.
Many of the young people that join us during their education years continue to live with us as adults, creating a real ‘family feel’ at Kisimul.
