Why do autistic children and adolescents have high levels of anxiety? How can they moderate and manage anxiety? How can you help?
In this session you will learn the reasons for high levels of anxiety, including impaired Theory of Mind, sensory sensitivity, and cognitive profiles. Plus, how some behaviours associated with autism can be coping mechanisms for anxiety.
In addition, you will learn strategies for an emotion education programme to explore and communicate a range of feelings and thoughts associated with anxiety. Plus, discover how to encourage a range of emotion communication and regulation abilities.

How can you spot which learning styles will benefit? What are the best ways to motivate? How do we adapt the school curriculum, and therapies, to benefit children?
This session explores the profile of cognitive abilities associated with autism, and how the school curriculum, and therapies, can be modified.
Discover how to identify associated autistic learning styles based on abilities and difficulties with processing visual/linguistic information, processing time, executive functioning, and the need to seek patterns and systems.
Additionally, you will learn ways of improving motivation, coping with errors, specific learning disorders, and social cohesion in group activities.

Tony Attwood on Autism – Developing the Friendship Abilities of Autistic Children in Primary School
Thursday 1 July, 09.00 – 12.00
Do you worry how your child will make friends? How can you assist positive social engagements? What role does camouflaging play?
In this session you will learn about the social reasoning and friendship abilities of autistic children in their primary school years and strategies to ‘read’ social situations with peers, facilitate social engagement, and make and keep friends.
The session will leave you being able to recognise the profile of social cognition associated with autism, adaptations to the profile including camouflaging, and the stages of friendship for typical children during those years.
Importantly, from the session you will learn strategies to better enable your child to develop friendship abilities at each stage, and enhance social cognition using a range of resources and activities.

Worried your teenager will experience greater challenges than their typical peers? How can you help your child during a time of great physical and mental change? Concerned about your child being impressionable?
From this session you will learn about the changing nature and depth of friendships and codes of conduct among adolescent peers, as well as potential signs of an emerging mood, personality or eating disorder. Plus, learn about the vulnerability of autistic adolescents to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.
Discover strategies to facilitate social cohesion, acceptance by peers and a positive sense of self. How you can best help an autistic adolescent cope with increased stress and exhaustion. Plus, ways to address aspects of sexuality.
